edmondsj Posted April 21, 2004 Report Posted April 21, 2004 I have an auto gearbox problem and no warranty. The gearbox seems to pop into neutral when under load in 4th or 5th gear. 1st to 3rd seem ok. Can anyone recommend a good auto gearbox specialist for the Galaxy? (I have a 2001 TDI (115) 32k miles) :( Quote

edmondsj Posted May 17, 2004 Author Report Posted May 17, 2004 :D For those of you who may be having galaxy auto gearbox problems here is the remainder of my story so far.... I've since discovered that my Galaxy has the new Jatco 5 speed auto box. It seems like the same or similar Jatco 5 speed boxes are used in the Audi A3, Mondeo, Jaguar X-type, Land Rover Freelander, Alhambra, Golf/Bora, Sharan and others.... It looks like this is a Japanese gearbox... Having been to, and telephoned, a few Ford service centres I didn't manage to get any useful information. They wanted me to book the car for an inspection at a cost of about Quote
Denis Posted May 17, 2004 Report Posted May 17, 2004 Strangely, I read an recent article by a Auto Gearbox repair engineer who said Jatco boxes were the best in the world! Doesn't seem to fit with the experiences some folk on here have had. The Daily Telegraph motoring correspondent 'Honest John' lists some more good autobox repairers, Quote
gazza007 Posted May 17, 2004 Report Posted May 17, 2004 Why do you have no warranty when car is under 3 years old?? Quote
Dave-G Posted May 18, 2004 Report Posted May 18, 2004 "Why do you have no warranty when car is under 3 years old?? " :D like mine, I guess it's an import? :D And mine had "clutch slip in 4th and 5th too........ :D wty job though :D Quote
edmondsj Posted May 18, 2004 Author Report Posted May 18, 2004 Car was bought from a Ford dealer in Belgium - DeZutter... Contacted Which? about warranty but sounds very complicated to make any sort of warranty claim... B) Quote
Jim Posted May 18, 2004 Report Posted May 18, 2004 Sounds very expensive not to make a warranty claim. I know my Ford Protect extended warranty covers me in Europe, so why would your Ford warranty from Belgium not cover you in the UK???? Quote
Ivor_E_Tower Posted May 18, 2004 Report Posted May 18, 2004 I think you will find that Belgium warranty, like most of Europe, is 24 months only, meaning that he's about 5 months out of warranty cover. Bad luck and all that...... Quote
MrT Posted May 19, 2004 Report Posted May 19, 2004 Interesting to note that on BBC watchdog recently there was an issue on Land Rovers seriously breaking down out of warranty due to a manufacturing defect and there was a lawyer on the program who said that manufacturers of cars had legal liability for manufacturing defects for 6 years. You can see the standard letter they have put on the site to complain at Landrover Letter. No doubt this could be amended and used for any vehicle. A path to consider? Maybe also a watchdog case for Galaxy AirCon? Quote
edmondsj Posted May 19, 2004 Author Report Posted May 19, 2004 Thanks for the suggestion, I will modify the Land Rover letter and send to Ford to complain about the gearbox failure. I'll let you know how I get on... B) Quote
